DÜSSELDORF, March 25th 2025 - Taking an apprenticeship promises to lay the best foundations for a successful career in Germany – and is becoming more popular again. According to the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung)**, motor vehicle mechatronics technician was the most popular apprenticeship in 2024. According to the Stepstone salary analysis, a median of 33,000 euros can be earned in the first three years in this job after successfully completing an apprenticeship.

But apprenticeships in 'White collar' roles, such as office management or sales are also popular.“Those who apply early have a good chance of getting an apprenticeship in popular jobs with top employers. That's why it is worth finding out about the job and salary opportunities and preparing your application now”, says The Stepstone Group labor market expert Dr. Tobias Zimmermann. In Germany, apprenticeships start in August or September, depending on the job and region.

Chemical technicians earn the most after completing their apprenticeship
The highest earners in the first three years after their apprenticeships are chemical technicians, who earn 46,250 euros. They are followed by social insurance clerks (45,000 euros) and electronics technicians for automation technology (43,000 euros). According to the Stepstone Salary Report 2025, the gross median salary for apprentice entry-level positions in Germany is 34,250 euros.

“Many apprenticeship-based careers offer attractive salaries and long-term job security. In times of labor shortage, specialized jobs with a high demand for skilled professionals are becoming a safe bet. These include, for example, technical and commercial occupations, as well as jobs in the skilled trades, but also in nursing and education,” says Tobias Zimmermann.“In addition to salary, clear career paths and development opportunities are particularly important from the perspective of young people. Employers who are strong in these two core aspects will be the first to fill their vacancies.”

Those who complete further qualification as a“Meister” after completing their apprenticeship can expect a significant increase in salary: on average, people who have passed the master (“Meister”) examination achieve a median salary of 52,000 euros – significantly more than the median gross salary in Germany (45,800 euros). Especially rewarding are the qualifications industrial foremen in the chemical industry (79,000 euros), network foremen (69,750 euros) or refrigeration plant constructors and dairy foremen (64,750 euros each). By way of comparison, the median salary for a university bachelor's degree is 51,250 euros.

“A high salary does not always require a university degree. An apprenticeship is a strong foundation for a successful career. It is not only the educational background that is important, but also commitment, professional experience, further training and leadership responsibility,” says Zimmermann.

What is the median salary? And how does it differ from the average salary?
The average is calculated by adding up all the values and then dividing them by the number of data records. The average value can be distorted by extremely high or low values. For a better understanding of the average value, it is therefore helpful to compare it with the median. The median is the value that lies exactly in the middle of all the values. This means that there are exactly the same number of salaries that are lower and higher than the median salary.
