Wildfires rage in Japan, force mass evacuations
(MENAFN) Authorities in Japan’s Okayama and Ehime prefectures have ordered the evacuation of approximately 2,800 local citizens as wildfires continue to spread even with overnight firefighting efforts.
The local governments called in military helicopters to assist in containing the flames, which have already scorched hundreds of hectares of land.
On Monday, footage showed a Self-Defense Forces helicopter releasing water on a forest fire, with thick black smoke rising into the air.
The fire that started on Sunday in Okayama has consumed 250 hectares in the cities of Okayama and Tamano, while a separate blaze in Imabari, Ehime, burned 119 hectares by Monday.
Local officials reported that multiple homes were destroyed in Okayama, but thankfully, no injuries have been reported in either location.
