US-S. Korea finalize major military exercise
(MENAFN) The United States and South Korea wrapped up their significant yearly joint military drill, Freedom Shield, on Thursday, aimed at strengthening their defense against North Korean military threats.
The drill, which was a computer-simulated drill, wrapped up after an 11-day "run in the face of North Korea's evolving nuclear and missile threats and deepening military cooperation with Russia," according to a news agency based in Seoul, based on South Korea’s military reports.
The exercise this year was particularly notable as it was first large-scale joint drill since US President Donald Trump's took office in January.
For this drill, South Korea stationed approximately 19,000 military personnel, and the two nations conducted broadened field exercises to improve their military interoperability.
The drills covered a wide range of domains including land, sea, air, cyber, and space. For the first time, South Korea's Strategic Command and the Naval Task Fleet Command participated in the exercise.
In response, North Korea condemned the exercise as a "dangerous provocative act," and launched multiple guided missiles, which were believed to be short-range, on the exercise's opening day.
