Indonesian security forces apprehend three soldiers for alleged arms trade in Papua
(MENAFN) In a crackdown on illegal arms sales to separatist rebels in the restive Papua region, Indonesia's security forces have apprehended three soldiers on suspicion of involvement in the illicit trade of weapons and ammunition.
The Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force, a joint military-police operation aimed at curbing armed separatist activities in Papua, announced on Tuesday that the three suspects were taken into custody in connection with a case involving seven civilians who were also implicated with similar offenses.
The seven suspects were reportedly operating across various provinces, supplying arms and ammunition to the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement (OPM).
Task force chief Faizal Ramadhani confirmed the soldiers were interrogated in Bandung, West Java, last Friday. The three soldiers are currently held at the Indonesian Army’s Siliwangi Military Command in Bandung.
Indonesia has long faced armed resistance from the TPNPB, which has been fighting for Papuan independence for decades, targeting both military and police forces, along with civilians.
