Pentagon director gives choice between war, defense

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has suggested renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War, launching a public poll to gauge support for the idea.

Hegseth shared the poll on X, asking for opinions on the potential name change. The poll has drawn over 160,000 responses, with more than half favoring a new name. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, endorsed the idea, commenting: “War is more accurate.”

Historically, the US military’s top agency was known as the Department of War for nearly 160 years before being restructured in 1947 under the National Security Act. It was officially renamed the Department of Defense in 1949 after merging with the Department of the Navy.

Earlier this month, Hegseth stated that Washington is prepared for war with China if necessary, in response to Beijing’s threats of trade retaliation. This week, the New York Times reported that Musk, in his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), was allegedly briefed on US military plans for a potential war with China.

The Wall Street Journal also claimed that Musk’s visit to the Pentagon may have given him access to sensitive military information, raising concerns about his business ties to China through Tesla and SpaceX.

Hegseth denied the allegations, dismissing them as "fake news." President Donald Trump also called the reports “completely untrue,” criticizing the media for spreading misinformation and stating that China was never discussed in the meeting.

According to a Congressional Research Service report, the US has deployed military forces abroad hundreds of times between 1798 and 2023, often to protect American interests or engage in armed conflicts. Major 21st-century interventions include Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Somalia. The US has formally declared war against foreign nations only 11 times in its history.
