Victoria's offence rate hits highest since 2016

(MENAFN) The crime rate in Victoria, Australia, rose by 13.2 percent in 2024, marking the steepest increase since 2016.

The most recent figures, published on Thursday by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA), reveal that property and fraud crimes saw the most significant rise, climbing by 21.9 percent, primarily due to theft-related crimes.

CSA Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley explained: "The rate of theft offences being recorded per 100,000 Victorians has exceeded historical peaks, driven by record-high numbers of steal from motor vehicle, steal from retail store and motor vehicle theft offences recorded by Victoria Police in 2024."

Dowsley pointed out that theft crimes have hit record levels, while young offenders are notably involved in car thefts, with adults in their 30s, struggling with living expenses, are contributing to the increase in shoplifting offenses.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Bob Hill described the rising crime rate as "unacceptable," emphasizing the negative effects on victims, as reported by a local media outlet.
