South Korea, U.S. Complete Military Exercise Amid North Korean Threats

(MENAFN) The United States and South Korea completed their significant yearly joint military training on Thursday, which was focused on strengthening their defense capabilities in response to growing North Korean military threats.

The exercise, known as Freedom Shield, was a computer-simulated drill that lasted 11 days and concluded amidst “North Korea's evolving nuclear and missile threats and deepening military cooperation with Russia,” as reported by a Korean news agency, quoting South Korea’s military.

This year's drill was notable as the first large-scale joint exercise between the two nations' armed forces since United States Leader Donald Trump resumed office in January.

With South Korea contributing approximately 19,000 troops, the drill included expanded field exercises designed to improve the two countries’ interoperability.

The exercises spanned various domains including land, sea, air, cyber, and space, with South Korea’s Strategic Command and the naval Task Fleet Command participating for the first time.

North Korea strongly condemned the exercise, labeling it a “dangerous provocative act.” On the first day of the drill, North Korea responded by launching several ballistic missiles, thought to be short-range missiles.
