North Macedonia Announces National Mourning Following Deadly Nightclub Fire

(MENAFN) North Macedonia has announced a seven-day national mourning period after a tragic nightclub fire in the eastern city of Kocani that resulted in at least 59 fatalities.

The government has ordered that flags at public institutions and in public spaces be flown at half-mast to honor the victims of the disaster.

The fire flared up on Sunday at about 3 a.m. local time (0200 GMT), apparently caused by pyrotechnic effects that ignited the nightclub's ceiling.

As the flames reached the walls and smoke got spread over the venue, the approximately 500 individuals inside escaped toward the only exit, leading to a deadly stampede.

Besides the confirmed deaths, 155 people were wounded, with 22 still in a critical status.
