Russia, African country consent on opposing sanctions

(MENAFN) Russia and Zimbabwe have signed a new agreement aimed at countering sanctions jointly, following a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Zimbabwean counterpart Amon Murwira in Moscow. The agreement will bolster collaboration in areas such as geological exploration, mineral resource extraction, energy, agriculture, and defense.

Zimbabwe has been under US and EU sanctions for over 20 years, while Russia has faced extended sanctions from the West, particularly after the 2014 annexation of Crimea. Recently, US sanctions on Russia have been renewed, and the EU has imposed numerous rounds of sanctions since the Ukraine conflict began in 2022.

Lavrov, during a press conference, reaffirmed Russia's commitment to supporting African countries, particularly in strengthening defense capabilities and addressing threats such as crime and terrorism. He emphasized that Russia would continue to provide assistance on a bilateral level, improving combat readiness, military training, and security agencies.

Murwira praised the strong political ties between Russia and Zimbabwe, stressing the importance of transforming these into more robust economic cooperation. He also noted that Zimbabwe is in the process of applying to join the BRICS group. The country has previously discussed this with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two nations have had growing cooperation in recent years, with Russia providing substantial aid, including wheat and fertilizer donations to Zimbabwe. Additionally, Zimbabwe launched its second satellite, ZimSat-2, in collaboration with Russian institutions. Furthermore, Russia has simplified visa procedures for Zimbabwean citizens, further enhancing bilateral ties.
