Soros-associated group lists US in human rights watchlist

(MENAFN) A group of NGOs associated with billionaire George Soros has added the United States to its list of countries with "faltering civic freedoms," citing executive orders signed by President Donald trump since taking office. The South African-based organization CIVICUS criticized the Trump administration for launching what it described as an “assault on Democratic norms and global cooperation.”

The US joins countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Italy, Pakistan, and Serbia on the 2025 watchlist, marking a significant shift from its historical role as a champion of democracy and human rights. CIVICUS highlighted Trump’s decisions to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), as well as dismantling the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which it claims undermine democratic institutions and global cooperation.

Trump’s withdrawal from these international bodies was driven by accusations of mismanagement and inefficiency, particularly during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic. The downsizing of USAID was also linked to alleged misuse of taxpayer money and corruption.

The purpose of the watchlist is to bring attention to the erosion of civic freedoms and to apply pressure on governments to cease crackdowns on civil rights. CIVICUS, which has received funding from Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF), is known for supporting liberal causes and political movements globally. Soros, a prominent donor to the Democratic Party, has been criticized by some, including Trump ally Elon Musk, for attempting to disrupt the president's political agenda.
