Experts say ICC chooses ‘easiest targets’
(MENAFN) The International Criminal Court (ICC) has arrested former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, capitalizing on a feud between two of the country’s most influential Political families, according to Daniel Hugo Santos, an analyst at the Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Institute, speaking to RT.
The ICC launched an investigation into the Philippine police's anti-drug operations in 2021, issuing an arrest warrant for Duterte in January, three years after his presidency ended. Santos suggested that the growing rift between Duterte and current President Bongbong Marcos has accelerated the ICC's actions.
The conflict between Duterte and Marcos began due to personal disputes and differing policies. Duterte accused Marcos of consolidating power and drug use, while Marcos countered by mentioning Duterte’s own use of the painkiller fentanyl. Meanwhile, Duterte’s daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, publicly threatened Marcos and his family, sparking impeachment proceedings last month.
Santos criticized the ICC for targeting "easier" countries in the Global South, alleging double standards in its approach. Duterte, 79, was detained at Manila’s international airport, flown to The Hague, and placed in ICC custody on Wednesday. He faces charges of crimes against humanity related to his "war on drugs" during his presidency from 2016 to 2022.
