Johns Hopkins University faces largest workforce reduction
(MENAFN) On Thursday, Johns Hopkins University (JHU) revealed that it has commenced dismissing over 2,000 employees in response to a substantial $800 million cut in federal financial support from the U.S. government under President Donald Trump’s administration.
This unprecedented move represents the largest workforce reduction in the history of the prominent scientific research university, directly impacting 247 staff members domestically and approximately 1,975 positions throughout 44 different nations.
JHU stated that "the largest layoffs in the university's history" will extend across multiple departments, including those within the medical and public health schools, as well as programs linked to a charitable body associated with the institution.
The university further expressed in a statement: "This is a difficult day for our entire community," acknowledging the emotional and professional toll on its employees.
Located in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University also holds the distinction of being the foremost private-sector workforce provider in Maryland. The institution now faces some of the most severe consequences from the recent federal budget cuts among major research universities.
The move came after the broader initiative by Trump administration to restructure the federal government, which has contained deep cuts to various agencies, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
