Flamengo Edges Fluminense In Carioca Championship Final First Leg

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) Flamengo secured a crucial 2-1 victory against Fluminense in the Carioca Championship final's first leg Wednesday at Maracanã Stadium.

Wesley gave the Rubro-Negro an early advantage with a goal in the first half. Juninho extended their lead later, while Keno pulled one back for Fluminense. The result puts Flamengo in a commanding position ahead of Sunday's decisive second leg.

Flamengo needs only a draw to claim the championship trophy. Fluminense faces an uphill battle, requiring either a three-goal victory to win outright or a two-goal win to force penalties.

Flamengo dominated early proceedings and broke the deadlock after just five minutes. Wesley struck from outside the box, surprising goalkeeper Fábio when the ball bounced awkwardly before hitting the post and crossing the line.

Fluminense responded by increasing their attacking pressure after conceding. The Tricolor struggled to create quality chances despite their efforts. Arias squandered their best opportunity at the 32-minute mark, shooting wide when one-on-one with Rossi.

Fluminense maintained possession advantage throughout the remaining first half. Canobbio tested Rossi with a threatening shot, but Flameng successfully preserved their lead into halftime.
Flamengo Strengthens Lead as Fluminense Fights Back
Flamengo emerged stronger after the break and nearly doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute. Arrascaeta fired a deflected shot from the edge of the area, forcing Fábio into a smart save.

The Rubro-Negro continued controlling the second half with Luiz Araújo and Juninho both coming close. Persistence paid off when Juninho scored in the 75th minute, his shot deflecting off Ignacio past a helpless Fábio.

Fluminense fought back desperately and reduced the deficit through Keno. The forward headed home a precise cross in the 87th minute, giving his team hope.

Fluminense pressed forward frantically in the closing minutes. However, Flamengo's defense held firm to secure the valuable first-leg advantage in this hotly contested Rio de Janeiro derby final.
