Trump delivers 100-minute speech to joint session of Congress

(MENAFN) Former President Donald Trump delivered a 100-minute speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, detailing his administration’s policy goals, economic strategies, and foreign policy objectives. His address highlighted plans to reduce government spending, bolster border security, and pursue diplomatic efforts in Ukraine.

Kicking off his speech, Trump declared that “America is back,” emphasizing his administration’s swift actions since taking office. He touted what he called unprecedented achievements in his first six weeks, including signing nearly 100 executive orders and taking over 400 executive actions to restore "common sense, safety, optimism, and wealth" across the country.

Trump credited his policies for what he described as a historic economic and political resurgence, pointing to a 27-point swing in national optimism and record-high small business confidence. He also claimed victory in the last election, citing a sweeping win across swing states and a dominant Electoral College result.

One of his key talking points was immigration. Trump praised his decision to declare a national emergency at the southern border, deploy military personnel, and tighten security measures—actions he argued resulted in record-low illegal border crossings. He sharply criticized the previous administration’s handling of border security, calling President Joe Biden "the worst president in American history."

Trump also took aim at congressional Democrats, lamenting their refusal to applaud his administration’s accomplishments. He urged them to set aside political divisions, at least for the night, and work together to advance the country’s progress.

His speech further outlined major policy reversals from the previous administration. He announced freezes on federal hiring, new regulations, and foreign aid. Additionally, he touted his withdrawal from international agreements, including the Paris Climate Accord, the World Health Organization, and the UN Human Rights Council. Trump celebrated the rollback of Biden-era environmental policies, particularly those related to electric vehicles, which he claimed were harming American auto workers.

Framing his administration as one of bold action and sweeping reforms, Trump promised to continue eliminating burdensome regulations, just as he did in his first term. His address reflected a firm commitment to his signature policies, setting the stage for further political battles in the months ahead.
