WSJ anticipates when Kiev’s army could struggle without US assistance

(MENAFN) The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has predicted that Ukraine’s military could struggle to maintain its current fighting capabilities by the summer without continued US support. With Russian forces advancing in the Donbass region, including the recapture of Novoandreyevka and Ulakly in the Donetsk People’s Republic, Ukraine faces mounting pressure.

Key US-supplied weapons, such as Patriot air defense systems, interceptor missiles, and long-range missile artillery like the ATACMS, are crucial for Ukraine's defense. Without these supplies, Ukraine could lose its ability to protect its rear lines and carry out long-range strikes. While Ukraine manufactures around 55% of its own military equipment, it depends on the US for specialized technologies that its European allies cannot replace.

US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy shift, which includes a suspension of military and financial aid to Ukraine, is leaving Kiev in a precarious position. The US has also demanded compensation for its aid in the form of access to $500 billion worth of Ukraine's critical minerals, a proposal rejected by Ukrainian President Zelensky.

In parallel, high-level talks between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia have begun to explore the possibility of resolving the conflict, setting the stage for a potential meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
