Moscow voices remarks on White House peace discussions allegations
(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has refuted claims made by the White House that a deal to end the Ukraine conflict could be reached in the coming days. Peskov responded to a statement by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who had said US President Donald trump was optimistic about securing a peace agreement soon.
Peskov stated he had no information supporting the claim and suggested that further clarifications would come from Washington. He also indicated that discussions regarding the conflict between Russian and US officials had not yet reached a level where specific terms for ending the hostilities were being addressed.
Leavitt’s comments followed high-level US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia aimed at restoring bilateral relations and possibly paving the way for a Trump-Putin summit. These talks, notably, excluded Ukrainian and EU representatives. Trump, in a recent speech, also indicated that a deal was "pretty close" to being reached.
Peskov responded positively to comments from White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, who mentioned a reassessment of the US approach to Ukraine. He noted that Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian President Zelensky might be seen as an attempt to address the conflict's underlying causes, something Russia believes is necessary for a lasting resolution.
Moscow has consistently argued that NATO’s expansion has provoked the conflict and maintains that a permanent peace agreement is only possible if Ukraine agrees to neutrality, demilitarization, and recognizes Russian territorial claims.
