Russia agrees to ‘peaceful’ use of nuclear technology with Ethiopia

(MENAFN) Russia and Ethiopia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, as stated in a Russian government Telegram post on Wednesday. This agreement was made during talks between Russia’s Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov and Ethiopian Minister for Innovation and Technology Belete Molla in Addis Ababa. In addition to nuclear cooperation, the officials discussed expanding ties in various sectors, including trade, agriculture, tourism, and the possibility of joint projects in fields such as information technology, education, and healthcare.

A roadmap was signed to outline “practical steps” for developing nuclear energy in Ethiopia, along with plans for building nuclear infrastructure and training personnel. Reshetnikov is part of a Russian delegation, including Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko, who are on a three-day official visit to Ethiopia. On Tuesday, they met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, with Matviyenko praising Ethiopia’s BRICS membership, which she sees as opening new opportunities for cooperation in international forums like the UN.

Prime Minister Abiy also expressed enthusiasm for strengthening Ethio-Russia relations, confirming his attendance at the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War celebrations in Moscow on May 9.

While in Ethiopia, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, a member of the visiting delegation, donated modern medical equipment to the Russian Red Cross Hospital in Addis Ababa, the first Russian healthcare facility in Africa. Andrey Maslov, head of the Center for African Studies in Moscow, noted that the visit marked an important step in improving relations, especially after Ethiopia’s recent BRICS membership. He highlighted Ethiopia’s significant achievements in agriculture, energy, digital technology, and construction, encouraging Russian businesses to seize opportunities in these areas.
