Chairman of Munich Security Conference labels Munich conference as ‘a nightmare’

(MENAFN) Christoph Heusgen, chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), labeled the results of last week’s gathering as a "nightmare" for Washington’s European allies. Heusgen specifically criticized the US under President Donald Trump, stating that it “lives on another planet,” referencing remarks made by US Vice President J.D. Vance at the event. Vance had accused EU nations of increasingly resembling the USSR in their suppression of dissent and growing detachment from their citizens, warning that such trends could lead to the US withdrawing its support for Europe.

In an interview with ZDF on Sunday, Heusgen, on his final day as MSC chairman, acknowledged that the event had at least clarified Europe’s understanding of the US stance. While some Republican senators expressed their commitment to "transatlantic unity," they were also cautious in their statements.

At the MSC, EU officials reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Zelensky calling for a united European army, highlighting Ukraine’s potential role in such an initiative. However, some EU members, like Poland, remain skeptical of a transnational military force to rival NATO. Heusgen advised Europeans to follow Zelensky's suggestions and unite, though a divide persists over how best to approach security in Ukraine.

The Trump administration has indicated that NATO or the US will not be involved in any future security arrangements in Ukraine following a ceasefire. Washington has also shown interest in gaining access to mineral resources under Ukrainian control to recoup its financial support for the conflict.

Zelensky has pushed for bold security measures for Ukraine, including NATO membership, foreign military contingents, and even nuclear capabilities, proposals which have been met with resistance from his supporters. As Heusgen closed the MSC, he became emotional, urging EU politicians to uphold the "rules-based order" despite the growing rift with the US.
