TUNIS, Feb 17 (NNN-XINHUA) - The 42nd session of the Arab Interior Ministers Council (AIMC) commenced here at the General Secretariat headquarters, the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) reported.

Chaired by Kuwait's Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, the two-day event has gathered Arab and Portugal's interior ministers, senior security officials, and high-level representatives from regional and global organizations to address pressing security challenges in the Arab region and strengthen police cooperation between the European Union and Arab countries, TAP reported.

Tunisian Interior Minister Khaled Nouri opened the session by stressing the importance of enhanced Arab cooperation against security challenges like drug trafficking, terrorism, illegal migration, and cybercrimes.

“Cybercrimes have emerged as a significant threat to the region, necessitating increased collaboration and strategic planning among Arab nations,” Nouri said.

Saudi Interior Minister Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz noted the growing dangers posed by armed terrorist organizations as they use cyberspace and advanced technologies to facilitate access to weapons and explosives.

He called for stronger Arab cooperation to enhance border security, implement rigorous monitoring measures, and develop effective security policies to counter emerging risks.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Ben Ali Koman, AIMC's secretary general, announced the upcoming launch of an automated criminal prosecution system, which will allow member states to access shared databases and process temporary detention requests electronically.

According to TAP, participants will discuss several strategic initiatives during the event. - NNN-XINHUA
