Media reports Disney abandoning woke policies
(MENAFN) Disney has modified some of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices, following a trend of companies adjusting their policies due to former President Donald Trump’s actions. According to reports from Axios and Variety, these changes were communicated in an internal memo by Disney’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Sonia Coleman.
Starting this year, Disney will replace the 'Diversity & Inclusion' performance factor, which was previously used to assess executive compensation, with a new focus on ‘Talent Strategy.’ The shift moves away from prioritizing diversity goals in leadership roles, instead emphasizing business success and maintaining Disney's entertainment-driven values.
Additionally, Disney will end its controversial ‘Reimagine Tomorrow’ initiative, which aimed to increase diversity in storytelling and talent representation, with plans for 50% of characters to come from minority backgrounds. The initiative, launched in 2021, received backlash and led to a federal civil rights complaint accusing Disney of discrimination based on race and other factors. Moving forward, the initiative will be rebranded as ‘MyDisneyToday,’ focusing on attracting top talent instead.
These policy shifts align with Trump’s push to limit DEI programs in the federal government. Although he cannot directly control private companies, his executive orders have encouraged businesses to reconsider such programs to avoid legal risks. Major corporations like Target, Amazon, Meta, and others have also altered their DEI efforts in response to these pressures.
