Data indicates Ukrainians progressively refusing asylum status in Germany

(MENAFN) According to a report by RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), nearly 20% of Ukrainian asylum seekers had their applications rejected in the second half of last year. This figure places Ukrainians second only to Syrians, who faced a slightly higher rejection rate of 20.6%. Other groups, such as migrants from Afghanistan and Turkey, also experienced significant rejections, although specific data wasn't provided.

While Ukrainians currently do not need to apply for asylum to receive shelter in Germany or other EU nations, their entry is not guaranteed. The federal government explained that asylum is denied to Ukrainians who have lived abroad for extended periods and are not facing immediate risks due to the ongoing conflict in their home country.

The report also revealed a drop in illegal entries into Germany, from 127,549 in 2023 to 83,572 in 2024, with a marked decline in asylum seekers applying without entry permits—from 44.7% to 23%. Germany has been the top destination for Ukrainian refugees since the Russian invasion in February 2022, having taken in nearly 1.15 million by the end of November 2024, representing 27.2% of the EU's total.

Despite this, Germany continues to accept migrants from other regions, with a total of 3.48 million refugees residing in the country by mid-2024. However, the country has also faced an uptick in violent crimes, with non-German nationals making up a larger share of offenses in 2023. In response, the Bundestag recently voted to tighten border controls, reflecting rising concerns over immigration and security.
