Trump set to engage with key Arab leaders

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump is set to engage with key Arab leaders, including the King of Jordan, the President of Egypt, and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, to discuss his controversial plan to resettle Palestinians displaced from Gaza. Israeli President Isaac Herzog confirmed that Trump’s proposal aims to relocate Palestinians temporarily to neighboring Arab nations, such as Jordan and Egypt, while Gaza is rebuilt. The goal is to eventually resettle some Palestinians in the redeveloped Gaza, which Trump envisions as "the Riviera of the Middle East."

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has voiced support for the plan, calling it a promising idea, the proposal has faced significant opposition. Jordan and Egypt have already rejected it, warning that it could destabilize ongoing ceasefire talks and negotiations for hostage releases with Hamas. The Arab League and Hamas have also criticized the plan, and global powers, including Germany, France, Brazil, Russia, and China, have condemned the suggestion, citing potential violations of international law and human rights concerns, with some describing it as “ethnic cleansing.”

Despite the widespread backlash, Trump is moving forward with diplomatic talks, seeking input from Arab leaders to refine the plan. Meanwhile, Israeli officials are engaged in indirect negotiations with Hamas in Qatar, aiming to extend the ceasefire and discuss post-war governance in Gaza.
