Trump announces plans to reestablish ties with N-Korea’s Kim

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has expressed a strong desire to rekindle relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, emphasizing the positive rapport they shared during his previous term. At a press conference, Trump stated, “We will have relations with North Korea and with Kim Jong-un,” reflecting on their past interactions. He credited his 2016 election victory with preventing potential conflict, claiming, “If I wouldn't have won, you would have ended up in a very bad situation.”

Trump underscored that his relationship with Kim had been beneficial for global stability, asserting that his ability to engage with the North Korean leader was an asset for everyone. He also noted that Japan, despite its strained relations with Kim, appreciated his diplomatic approach, seeing it as beneficial for the region.

During his first term, Trump shifted US foreign policy toward direct diplomacy with North Korea. After initial tensions in 2017, he met Kim in 2018 for the first-ever summit between a sitting US president and the North Korean leader, resulting in a broad, though vague, agreement on denuclearization. A second summit in 2019 ended without a deal, but Trump remains hopeful that continued engagement could prevent further conflict.
