Orban Threatens Legal Action Against Foreign-Funded Groups Criticizing His Government

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared that he would ensure the transparent reporting of aid from the United States to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and media outlets critical of his government. During a state radio broadcast on Friday, Orban stressed the importance of removing foreign networks that interfere with Hungary's domestic affairs, specifically pointing to programs funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The agency has directed billions of dollars towards supporting media efforts that align with US foreign policy.

Orban also referenced US President Donald Trump's initiative to integrate USAID into the State Department, a move that reflects the “America First” approach.

“In America, we would call them agents, as they do not serve their own country but accept money from another power... We don’t call them agents... but these are people and organizations paid from abroad whose job is to overthrow the Hungarian government,” Orban remarked.

Having been in power since 2010, Orban, who will seek re-election in 2026, stated that those receiving foreign funds should face “legal consequences” and be “squeezed out” as they pose a threat to Hungary's sovereignty.
