EU Energy Imports from Russia Rise Despite Efforts to End Dependence

(MENAFN) Russian energy continues to flow into the European Union, despite the bloc’s ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on it, according to a European Commission spokesperson.

In the first two weeks of 2025, EU imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia saw a significant rise, increasing by over 10 percent compared to the same period last year.

“Russian energy – particularly gas – is still present in the EU,” said Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, the EC spokesperson for climate action and energy, during a press briefing on Monday.

Itkonen mentioned that the European Commission plans to release a roadmap by late February or mid-March, aimed at completely ending Russian energy imports.

Last week, Politico reported, citing data from commodities provider Kpler, that Russian LNG imports into EU member states reached an all-time high in early 2025, with 837,300 metric tons purchased in the first 15 days of the year. Itkonen had previously acknowledged that Russian gas imports, especially LNG, increased throughout 2024.
