(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald trump announced plans for the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip after Palestinians are resettled elsewhere, describing the region as a "demolition site" that could be developed economically. Trump's proposal, which diverges sharply from decades of U.S. policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was made during a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump stated that the U.S. would handle the process of dismantling dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons in Gaza. He also suggested the area could be developed into a prosperous zone, offering thousands of jobs, and become a model for the Middle East. He envisioned the strip potentially becoming "the Riviera of the Middle East," a place for "the people of the world" to call home.

While Netanyahu supported Trump's innovative thinking, Trump refrained from explaining how the U.S. could legally occupy Gaza long-term. Trump hinted at the possibility of creating a long-term monarchy in the region, claiming that regional leaders backed the plan and that it would bring stability. Earlier, Trump had called on Jordan and Egypt to accept displaced Palestinians, following nearly 16 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas. His new proposal for permanent resettlement of Gaza's residents, however, contradicted previous offers and faced rejection from Arab leaders.

The forced displacement of Palestinians is expected to draw opposition both regionally and internationally, including from the U.S.'s Western allies. Hamas condemned the proposal, calling it an act of expulsion and a threat to regional stability. Saudi Arabia also reiterated its refusal to engage with Israel unless a Palestinian state is established. Trump’s plan for Gaza follows intense diplomatic talks with Netanyahu, as well as other controversial proposals during his second term, including ideas about U.S. control of Greenland and the future of the Panama Canal.
