Palestinian President, Palestinian leadership strongly reject proposals to seize control of Gaza Strip
(MENAFN) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership have strongly rejected proposals to seize control of the Gaza Strip and forcibly displace Palestinians from their homeland. In a statement on Wednesday, President Abbas responded to U.S. calls for displacement by asserting, "We will not allow any harm to the rights of our people, which we have fought for over decades with great sacrifices. These calls are a serious violation of international law, and peace and stability in the region cannot be achieved without establishing a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 borders, based on the two-state solution."
President Abbas emphasized that the Palestinian people will never relinquish their land, rights, and holy sites, with Gaza being an integral part of Palestine, along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which have been occupied since 1967. He reaffirmed that legitimate Palestinian rights are non-negotiable, with the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. Abbas made it clear that no one has the authority to decide on the future of the Palestinian people on their behalf.
The President expressed appreciation for the strong and consistent Arab stance against displacement and annexation, and for supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state as a prerequisite for peace, in line with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. He particularly acknowledged the positions of Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia for rejecting displacement and supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. President Abbas called on the United Nations Secretary-General and the Security Council to take urgent action to protect the resolutions of international legitimacy, safeguard the rights of the Palestinian people, and work towards ending the Israeli occupation of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Palestinian leadership remains committed to international law and the Arab Peace Initiative, which supports the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, including Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
