Tunisian Court Sentences Ex-Speaker Of Parliament, Ex-FM To Jail


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TUNIS, Feb 5 (KUNA) -- The second chamber of Tunis Court of First Instance handed down on Wednesday jail sentences, ranging from five to 34 years, against nearly 40 defendants in the so-called "Instalingo" case.
The defendants include Rached Ghannouchi - former speaker of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People (from November 2019 to July 2021), and other senior government officials, journalists and bloggers.
Ghannouchi, a cofounder of Ennahda (renaissance) movement, has been remanded in custody since April 2023 on charges of conspiracy and money laundering.
He was sentenced to 22 years in jail, his son Muaz - 25 years, and his daughter Somayya - 35 years.
His son-in-law Rafik Abdessalem, who serviced as foreign minister between December 2011 and March 2013, was sentenced in absentia to 34 years.
Two security officers were sentenced to 13 year and 15 years each, while two female journalists and two bloggers got jail sentences ranging between five and 27 years. (end)
