Viral song by two Russian schoolgirls sparks controversy

(MENAFN) A viral song by two Russian schoolgirls, "Sigma Boy," which recently charted in Billboard's top ten dance hits, has sparked controversy. Nela Riehl, a member of the European Parliament for the Volt Germany party, labeled it a “Russian trope” intended to spread propaganda through social media. During a parliamentary session in December, Riehl argued that the song communicates patriarchal and pro-Russian worldviews and is used to influence young people, particularly Ukrainians, by promoting Russian ideas through viral content.

Riehl emphasized that Russia strategically embeds such content into popular discourse to target youth, even influencing cultural heritage beyond history books and museums, including language, music, and influencers. She urged the EU to combat these subtle forms of Russian influence.

However, the song's lyrics, which focus on a teenage girl's feelings about a boy and their relationship, do not contain any political messages or pro-Russian content. Despite this, Riehl expressed concern over the impact of social media platforms on young people and the spread of ideas through viral content.
