Trump Signs Orders To Cut UNRWA Funding, Withdraw From UNHRC

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Feb 5 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump signed an executive order late Tuesday to prevent any American funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and another to withdraw the US from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The US is UNRWA's largest donor but halted its funding last year after the Israeli occupation accused the agency of involvement in the October 7 attack.
According to UNRWA, the agency provides aid, protection and advocacy for Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the occupied Palestinian territories until a just solution is achieved.
UNRWA is funded almost entirely through voluntary contributions from UN member states, noting that its services include education, healthcare, relief, infrastructure, camp improvements, community support, microfinance, and emergency response during conflicts.
The US had previously withdrawn from UNHRC during Trump's first term, but former President Joe Biden later rejoined it. (end)
