EU Must Find Most Creative Way To Use Frozen Russian Assets - Von Der Leyen

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The European Union must find the most creative way to use frozen Russian assets and strengthen sanctions against Russia, making it clear to the Kremlin that the longer its war of aggression against Ukraine persists, the greater the cost will be for Russia.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this in her speech at the annual EU Ambassadors conference in Brussels, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"No one wants peace more than the people of Ukraine. But there is only one path to the just and lasting peace they are longing for. And this runs through military and financial strength for Ukraine," von der Leyen said.

She noted that the EU sanctions are dealing a serious blow to the Russian economy, which is facing high inflation and a record interest rate. She said that the EU was currently preparing a 16th package of sanctions against Russia and added that the phase-out of Russian fossil fuels must continue.

"It is incredibly important that Member States extended the freeze of Russian assets. Now we can continue to put our minds to work on the most creative use of these assets to support Ukraine's fight for freedom. We must show the Kremlin that the longer the war, the higher the price for Russia," von der Leyen said.
