(MENAFN- The Rio Times) In a rain-soaked match at Moisés Lucarelli Stadium, Corinthians secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Ponte Preta on Wednesday night. The win, reported by Globo Esporte, propelled Corinthians to third place in the overall standings of the Paulista Championship.

Corinthians dominated the waterlogged pitch, creating numerous chances throughout the game. The breakthrough came in the second half when Talles Magno found the net with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box.

The victory boosted Corinthians to 12 points, level with leaders Mirassol and São Bernardo. Only goal difference separates the top three teams in the championship standings.

Despite the challenging conditions, both teams managed to create opportunities in the first half. Yuri Alberto threatened Ponte Preta 's goal in the 18th minute, but goalkeeper Diogo Silva made a crucial save.

The second half saw Corinthians intensify their attacks. Ángel Romero came close to scoring in the 9th minute, but Diogo Silva once again denied the visitors.

Talles Magno finally broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. The young forward skillfully maneuvered through puddles and defenders before slotting the ball past Diogo Silva.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 80th minute when José Martínez received a second yellow card, reducing Corinthians to ten men. However, the team's resilience shone through as they held off Ponte Preta's late surge.

This victory keeps Corinthians in second place in Group A, trailing Mirassol only on goal difference. Ponte Preta, meanwhile, sits third in Group D with six points.

Corinthians' next challenge comes on Saturday against Noroeste at Neo Química Arena. Ponte Preta will face Água Santa away from home on Sunday.

The win showcases Corinthians' determination and tactical prowess under coach Ramón Díaz. As the Paulista Championship heats up, Corinthians' performance in adverse conditions bodes well for their title aspirations.
