Scholz Ready To Talk To Putin Again Despite Disappointment From Previous Call

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed readiness to have another phone call with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin despite the lack of a positive outcome from the previous conversation.

Scholz said this on the air of RTL TV, Ukrinform reports.

According to Scholz, the previous phone conversation with Putin proved a disappointment for him.

"It was a disappointment because he simply repeated all his formulas," the Chancellor said.

However, despite the lack of any result, Scholz continues to insist that the phone call was necessary to make it clear to the Kremlin leader that he should not expect German support for Ukraine to wane. In addition, Scholz told Putin“that he must withdraw troops (from Ukraine) in order to create the basis for peaceful development.”

Therefore Scholz is ready for further negotiations with Putin, although he has no illusions about the possible success of such a conversation.

“This must be done, and I will do it again. But there is no need to have illusions about this,” said the head of the German government.

It should be recalled that Scholz called Putin on his own initiative on November 15, for the first time since December 2022. At the same time, he tried to do this a few weeks before, but the Kremlin turned the offer down. This caused massive criticism not only in Ukraine and its partner states, but also to a large extent in Germany itself.

The Social Democratic Party candidate for chancellor's post in the next election is positioning himself in the re-election campaign as a "chancellor of peace".
