Uruguay reports population of 3,499,451, marking increase of 2.5 percentage units

(MENAFN) Uruguay's 2023 national census reported a population of 3,499,451, marking an increase of 2.5 percentage points from the 2011 census, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Despite this growth, the fertility rate has declined, with the number of children per woman falling from 1.8 to 1.7. The census also recorded 31,385 births and 34,678 deaths in the country last year.

INE director Diego Aboal noted that Uruguay is experiencing negative population growth, unless immigration compensates for the decline. He pointed out that the country has seen a drop of 18,000 births in the last eight years, signaling a trend of demographic decline. This situation could result in a population loss if the trend continues without significant migration.

The census also highlighted a 4 percent increase in the number of foreign residents settling in Uruguay since 2011, suggesting that immigration could play a key role in mitigating the country's population decline.

Montevideo remains the most populous city in Uruguay, with a population of 1,302,954, which accounts for 37 percent of the nation's total population. The capital city continues to be the dominant urban center in the country.
