Department of Military Operations of Syrian armed factions announce their forces had taken complete control of city of Deir Ezzor

(MENAFN) On Tuesday night, the Department of Military Operations of Syrian armed factions announced that their forces had taken complete control of the city of Deir Ezzor. A spokesperson confirmed that both the city and its military airport had been "fully liberated."

The Department of Operations called for a cessation of gunfire by military groups and civilians in the surrounding areas. It was reported that fighters were advancing in the countryside of Deir Ezzor after securing the city center and its western and eastern outskirts.

Earlier reports had indicated that gunmen had seized the governorate building after the withdrawal of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) troops. Syrian sources also stated that the military factions had taken control of an oil field after entering the area known as "Deir Ezzor Oil Time."

This development follows an earlier announcement from last Friday, where sources indicated that a U.S.-backed coalition, led by Syrian Kurdish militants, had captured Deir Ezzor, marking it as the third major city lost by President Bashar al-Assad's regime in just one week.

In a separate statement, the Department of Military Operations reported that hundreds of former Syrian regime forces in Deir Ezzor had surrendered. These defections occurred after intense fighting at various battlefronts in the region, where opposition factions successfully tightened their grip on strategic positions and imposed a siege on regime forces in the area.
