New York, Dec. 11 (Petra) – The United Nations General Assembly will convene Wednesday for the continuation of its tenth emergency special session, where it will deliberate on a draft resolution aimed at reaffirming support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The resolution, jointly sponsored by Jordan, Indonesia, Algeria, Guinea, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Egypt, and Palestine, underscores the critical role of UNRWA in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees.
The draft resolution reaffirms the General Assembly's backing of UNRWA's mandate across all its fields of operation, including Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the occupied Palestinian territories.
It strongly condemns recent Israeli legislation passed by the Knesset on October 28, and calls on Israel to fully comply with its international obligations. Specifically, it urges Israel to respect the agency's privileges and immunities, fulfill its responsibilities towards UNRWA, and ensure the unimpeded, timely, and safe delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza and other areas in need.
The resolution also warns against any efforts to undermine or reduce the scope of UNRWA's operations, stressing that such actions would have severe humanitarian consequences for the millions of Palestinian refugees who depend on the agency's services. Furthermore, it highlights the broader regional implications of disrupting the agency's work.
In addition, the draft calls for the provision of compensation, in line with international law, for the damages sustained by UNRWA's operations in the occupied Palestinian territories. The resolution also requests the UN Secretary-General to conduct the necessary assessments to facilitate the determination of these compensatory measures.
