Russia plans on launching fresh gas pipeline to China

(MENAFN) Russia has begun the development of a new gas pipeline to China, passing through Kazakhstan, with a planned annual capacity of 45 billion cubic meters (bcm), Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak announced on Wednesday. The pipeline will deliver 35 bcm of gas annually to China, while the remaining 10 bcm will be allocated to Kazakhstan.

Novak described the project as strategically important for bilateral energy cooperation and noted that feasibility studies and negotiations are underway to finalize the agreement. Kazakhstan will host part of the pipeline's infrastructure and will benefit from the gas supply, especially for its northern regions.

Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev expressed strong support for the project, which aims to enhance the country's energy supply. This new initiative builds on the increasing economic ties between Russia and China, with bilateral trade expected to surpass $200 billion by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Russia has set new records for gas deliveries to China through the existing Power of Siberia pipeline, with an agreement to supply 38 bcm annually starting in 2025.
