Turkish business world shows optimism for Syria’s after-regime days

(MENAFN) The Turkish business community stays optimistic for Syria’s next days in the rouse of the overthrow of the ages-old Baathist rule.
Mustafa Gultepe, chief of the Turkey Exporters Assembly (TIM), informed a Turkish news agency that Syria began a new phase the current week, and since it is hard to expect the development of happenings, Gultepe stated this phase would lead to peace and calmness to the country.
He noted that Syria is a very important market for Turkey, given both nations stocks a boundary of around 900 kilometers (560 miles).
“We started working towards increasing our foreign trade volume of USD1.4 billion in 2008 –before the (2011) civil war – to USD5 billion, and although the war hurt our efforts, Turkish exports to Syria continued,” he stated.
“Turkish exports to Syria in 2011 totaled USD1.6 billion but this figure dropped the next year to USD498 million due to the civil war. However, we managed to reach and exceed the USD2 billion limit in 2021-2023, and this year, Turkish exports to Syria reached USD1.9 billion in January-November, up 4.6 percent on an annual basis,” he further noted.
