Media reports Zelensky requesting peace from NATO

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Ukraine could consider a ceasefire with Russia if NATO membership is guaranteed. In an interview with Kyodo News, Zelensky stated that being part of NATO would strengthen Ukraine’s position in case of future conflicts with Moscow.

Zelensky previously maintained that peace talks could only occur if Russia withdrew completely from Ukrainian territories and restored Ukraine’s 1991 borders. However, last week, he shifted his stance, suggesting that Ukraine could agree to a ceasefire without regaining the lost territories, provided NATO membership was assured. He admitted that the Ukrainian military currently lacks the strength to reclaim these areas, including Crimea, but emphasized that such goals could be pursued later through diplomatic means once Ukraine is in a stronger position.

He reiterated that NATO membership is crucial for Ukraine’s security, geopolitics, and economic stability. Zelensky argued that NATO guarantees would not only protect Ukraine but also attract investments and businesses to the country. Ukraine applied for NATO membership in September 2022, though the alliance has made it clear that membership will only be considered after the conflict with Russia is resolved.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently opposed Ukraine’s NATO ambitions, stating that it was one of the key causes of the ongoing war and demanding Ukraine’s commitment to neutrality and territorial concessions before peace talks can take place.
