Germany's Defense Ministry supports general Breuer's trip to Israel despite war crimes claims

(MENAFN) On Friday, Germany's Ministry of Defense defended General Carsten Breuer, the Inspector General of the German armed forces (Bundeswehr), following his controversial trip to Israel amid UN war crimes allegations.

“First of all, I would like to say that I do not want to adopt your assessment of the term war criminal,” Natalie Jenning, deputy spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense, replied during a press briefing when asked why Breuer met with Israel’s Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy while Israel faces accusations of war crimes from the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

“Moreover, we always coordinate thoroughly with our partners and other nations at all levels, and this applies to the inspector general level as well,” she continued.

Jenning declined to disclose any specifics regarding the discussions between Breuer and Halevy.

As per the Israeli military, the two leaders focused on “recent operational developments, especially on the northern front, enhancing cooperation between the armies, and preparing for both near and distant threats.”

The UN has accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
