Foreign-backed terrorists in northwest Syria escalate attacks on Syrian army positions

(MENAFN) In recent days, foreign-backed terrorists in northwest Syria have escalated attacks on Syrian army positions in the Aleppo and Idlib regions, as well as shelling civilian areas in Aleppo. While regional media reports have detailed the conflict, the situation in Aleppo remains unclear, with some terrorist-aligned outlets claiming control over several western districts and even the city center. However, local videos show normalcy in these areas, countering these claims.

The latest offensive, known as "Operation Deterrence of Aggression," began on November 27, with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Turkish-backed factions attacking the Aleppo and Idlib countryside. These militants reportedly received new weaponry, including Ukrainian drones, for the operation. The terrorist forces have shelled civilian areas, including the Aleppo University dormitories, leading to casualties.

By Friday, the Syrian Arab Army had retaken many positions, inflicting heavy losses on the militants, including hundreds of casualties and the destruction of numerous vehicles and drones. Despite this, terrorists continued to try advancing on two fronts in rural Aleppo and Idlib. The Syrian Army warned citizens to disregard misinformation from terrorist groups.

This offensive, supported by Turkey, the US, and Israel, appears aimed at destabilizing Syria and weakening the "Axis of Resistance" against Israel. Some analysts suggest that Turkey's involvement may be aimed at pressuring Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to engage in normalization talks with Ankara, which Assad previously rejected. Another goal could be to sever Hezbollah's supply lines, particularly during the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire.
