UN head expresses support for ceasefire between Israel, Hezbollah
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his support for the recently brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, urging both parties to adhere to the terms of the agreement. Guterres welcomed the ceasefire announcement, hoping it would bring an end to the violence and suffering affecting both nations. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, emphasized the need for all commitments under the deal to be respected and swiftly implemented by both sides.
The UN chief also pointed to the readiness of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to assist in implementing the ceasefire agreement. Furthermore, Guterres called for immediate steps towards the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which has been a key element in ensuring peace in the region.
Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, praised both Israel and Hezbollah for taking the opportunity to end the violence, calling it the beginning of a critical process towards restoring safety and security for civilians on both sides of the Blue Line. However, she stressed that considerable work lies ahead, requiring unwavering commitment from both parties to ensure the agreement endures.
The ceasefire deal was approved by Israel’s security cabinet and confirmed by US President Joe Biden. It will take effect at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday, with plans for the Lebanese Armed Forces to deploy and take control of southern Lebanon over the next 60 days, during which Israel will gradually withdraw its forces from the region.
