BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. COP29 in Baku
aims to change the future of humanity and unite us for a green
world, the representative of the Global Institute for Water
Environment and health Fathi Khaled from Yemen told Trend.
“I am originally from Yemen, but I came from Geneva,
Switzerland, where I live and work. This is the first time I am
coming to Azerbaijan, it is really an amazing, beautiful country
with nice people. I fell in love with your country at first
sight.
Everything here is organized at a high level; we are pleased to
be in Azerbaijan and to take part in the world conference. People
from all over the world have come here to change the future of
mankind to a green world. We need to make a lot of efforts to fight
climate change, and we hope that through this, taking into account
the scale of the event, we will definitely make the best for the
generation.
In my opinion, it is very important to plant trees everywhere
and to take care of the nature that feeds us like a mother. It is
our planet. Each one of us is a son or daughter of this family. It
is our responsibility to take care of Mother Earth," Fathi Khaled
noted.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to
the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29)
started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth
Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human
interference in the climate system.
A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless
the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first
COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat
is located in Bonn.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and
ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate
finance. The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that
include linkages between climate action and the Sustainable
Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy
storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane
reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies,
and other topics.
