Born and raised in Hawaii, Dr. Nakaya is a proud graduate of Hawaii public schools (PCHS '84). She pursued her undergraduate education at Wellesley College and earned her DVM from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. After spending 20 years on the mainland advancing her education and career, she returned to the Big Island in 2005, where she owned and operated a mobile veterinary practice specializing in integrative care for geriatric, exotic, and special-needs patients.
Dr. Nakaya is also the author of Kindred Spirit, Kindred Care: Making Health Decisions On Behalf of Animal Companions (2004) and Graceful Aging, Graceful Exits (2011-2020), with a new edition in progress alongside co-author Cathy Symons, CVT, CHPT.
