Israel warns that Erdogan possibly to end up like Saddam
(MENAFN) Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has issued a stern warning to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, comparing his potential intervention in the Gaza conflict to the fate of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Katz's comments follow Erdogan's recent threats regarding the ongoing military operations in Gaza and the intensifying tensions with Hezbollah.
During a rally in his hometown of Rize, Erdogan suggested that Turkey might take drastic actions, including potentially "entering" Israel, to support the Palestinians. Erdogan’s remarks included strong criticisms of Israeli actions in Gaza, drawing controversial parallels between Israel’s conduct and that of Nazi Germany, and likening Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.
In response, Katz took to X (formerly Twitter) to caution Erdogan. He warned that Erdogan's aggressive rhetoric and threats could lead him down a path similar to that of Saddam Hussein. Katz recalled that Hussein's regime was toppled and he was eventually executed following a United States-led invasion in 2003. “Erdogan is going down the path of Saddam Hussein and threatens to attack Israel,” Katz stated, reminding Erdogan of the historical consequences faced by the former Iraqi dictator.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid also condemned Erdogan’s statements, describing him as a “danger to the Middle East” and a “wannabe dictator.” Lapid urged the international community and NATO members to strongly condemn Erdogan's threats and to pressure him to cease his support for Hamas.
Saddam Hussein was removed from power during the 2003 invasion and was later captured by United States forces. He was tried and convicted by an Iraqi court for crimes against humanity and was executed by hanging in 2006.
