Iran’s supreme chief officially consents new leader
(MENAFN) Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, officially recognized Masoud Pezeshkian as the new President of the Islamic Republic in a formal ceremony held on Sunday. This endorsement marks a crucial step in Pezeshkian’s transition to office, with Khamenei presenting him with the “decree of confirmation,” a document affirming his right to assume the presidency.
The ceremony was attended by numerous Iranian officials and dignitaries, including Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi, who delivered a report on the recent snap elections. These elections were necessitated by the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19. After an initial round of voting in late June failed to yield a decisive outcome, a runoff election was held. On July 5, Masoud Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old moderate candidate, won the presidency with 53.6 percent of the vote.
Pezeshkian’s formal inauguration is scheduled to take place at the Iranian Parliament in two days, with an expected attendance of over 2,500 individuals, including 70 delegations from foreign nations and international organizations.
In his address during the confirmation ceremony, Khamenei emphasized his commitment to enhancing relations with Iran’s neighboring countries. However, he also reiterated Tehran’s strong condemnation of the situation in Gaza and maintained a firm anti-Israel stance, describing the Israeli government as “a gang of criminals, murderers, and terrorists.”
Following Khamenei’s endorsement, Pezeshkian addressed the attendees, affirming his commitment to align his presidency with the guidance of the Supreme Leader. “The responsibility that the Constitution has placed on me is to move towards the clear path outlined by the Supreme Leader,” Pezeshkian stated, as reported by the Iran International news outlet.
The confirmation of Pezeshkian marks a significant moment in Iranian politics, as he prepares to take on the role of president and navigate the country’s domestic and international challenges.
