Israeli military storm Balata refugee camp in eastern Nablus

(MENAFN) Late Saturday, the Israeli army stormed the Balata refugee camp in eastern Nablus, located in the northern West Bank, marking the fourth such incursion in just 24 hours. According to reports from a Palestinian news agency, the military forces entered the camp amid intense gunfire, deploying snipers and bringing in reinforcements, including a bulldozer. This escalation was captured by activists on social media who shared videos purportedly showing military reinforcements heading towards the camp and the sounds of gunfire, which they attributed to clashes between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army.

The raid on the Balata camp, which lasted several hours, ended late Saturday with the army withdrawing from the area. Witnesses and Palestinian medical sources reported that the operation resulted in the deaths of two Palestinians and left dozens injured. This incursion is part of a broader pattern of intensified military actions by the Israeli army in the West Bank, which have been occurring simultaneously with their offensive on the Gaza Strip. Official Palestinian data indicates that these operations in the West Bank have led to 592 deaths and approximately 5,400 injuries.

Tensions have been escalating across the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem, amid a severe and deadly Israeli offensive in Gaza. Since October 7, nearly 39,300 people in Gaza have fallen victim to the conflict. The situation in the West Bank has similarly deteriorated, with frequent and violent incursions by the Israeli military exacerbating the already volatile environment.

In a significant development, the International Court of Justice issued a landmark opinion on July 19, declaring Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories illegal. The court demanded the evacuation of all existing settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, marking a crucial stance in the international community regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This opinion has added to the mounting international pressure on Israel regarding its policies and actions in the occupied territories.
