Traditionally, the tricolour is hoisted across the nation on Independence Day. However, Nehru had initially considered a different plan for the first Independence Day in 1947.

According to a tweet by The Analyzer, Nehru had proposed hoisting the British Union Jack alongside the Indian tricolour on August 15, 1947. This information comes from a letter written by Nehru to Lord Mountbatten on August 10, 1947. The tweet included a picture of the letter, which provides insight into Nehru's plan.
