Intense thunderstorms in France lead to severe flooding in northeastern region

(MENAFN) Since late Saturday, intense thunderstorms have resulted in severe flooding in France's Haute-Marne department, causing significant disruption and injuries. The communes of Bologne, Marault, Anneville-la-Prairie, and Meures have been particularly affected, experiencing rainfall that was ten times higher than typical levels within just one hour, according to a recent weather update from the department.

As a result of the extreme weather, at least five individuals have been hospitalized, primarily due to hypothermia. Additionally, 34 people have been evacuated from their homes. The excessive rainfall has rendered several roads impassable, complicating transportation and emergency response efforts. The local power grid has also suffered damage, leaving 63 households without electricity.

In response to the severe weather conditions, the French Meteorological Service initially issued an orange weather alert for the region on Saturday, which signifies a high level of caution due to hazardous weather. This alert was subsequently downgraded to yellow on Sunday, indicating that while conditions remain potentially dangerous in some areas, the severity has decreased.

Authorities have issued warnings that the already waterlogged ground could exacerbate flooding if further intense rainfall occurs. Alongside the flooding risks, there are also concerns about wind gusts reaching approximately 70 kilometers per hour (43 miles per hour) and the possibility of small-sized hail. However, the primary focus remains on the potential for additional flooding due to heavy rain.

Local officials are actively monitoring the situation and have advised residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety amid the ongoing weather challenges.
