Three fresh power plant units in Iran to go into operation by late September

(MENAFN) Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, the spokesman for Iran's energy Ministry's electricity sector, has announced that three new power plant units are set to go into operation by the end of the current Iranian calendar year's summer, which concludes on September 22. These power plants are being built with state-of-the-art technologies to enhance the country’s electricity infrastructure.

Rajabi Mashhadi noted that the peak electricity consumption this year has reached 77,514 megawatts. Iran is experiencing a steady increase in electricity demand, with approximately one million new subscribers added to the power grid annually. To address this growing demand, the Energy Ministry has outlined plans to construct new power plants with a total capacity of 22,000 megawatts (MW). This includes 12,000 MW from renewable sources and 9,000 MW from cycle power plants, with completion expected within the next three years.

Over the past three years, Iran has invested up to three billion dollars annually in the electricity sector. The country’s electricity generation has grown significantly, achieving a 13.5 percent increase during the administration of the late President Ebrahim Raisi. Iran's electricity output in 2023 was 382.9 terawatts/hour, marking a 4.3 percent rise from the previous year. This growth rate is nearly double the global average, which saw a 2.5 percent increase in total electricity generation. Iran's electricity generation now exceeds that of industrialized nations such as the UK and Italy.
